Domestic Architecture

Designing your dream home....

Our main focus recently has been in the domestic sector due to the higher level of clients wanting to improve their own home, through alteration and extension, instead of moving. We also have clients that look to buy their own piece of land and create their 'dream' home that will last them a lifetime.

Undertaking any sort of work within your home can sometimes be a daunting thought, however at Grid Design we strive to guide our client's through the project in a way that makes it enjoyable by breaking the project down into easy manageable steps. Each extension / alteration is unique, and we believe that the driving force behind carrying out work to existing dwellings is to make clever design moves which allow your existing home to change and work for you, the way you want and need it too.

At Grid Design we have extensive experience in advising our clients on the optimum design solutions to alter and extend their home that allow us to unlock its potential.

Interior Alterations

Creating amazing homes....

In our opinion one of the most interesting aspects of architectural design is having the opportunity to create a piece of art that can be experienced and inhabited as well as being enjoyed visually.

It also brings us great satisfaction to bring hints of interesting architecture and design into people's existing homes to change the way it feels and works for them.

Creating interesting volumes is fascinating added to by the ability to use combinations of; natural / artificial light, colour on the walls and floor materials which can enhance the feel of the space.

Conservation

Maintaining history....

Our work in the conservation field often involves a variety of buildings that are either listed, within a conservation area or require a sensitive and considered design approach due to their rural or historical setting.

These buildings require not only an understanding of the past but a consideration for their future and how they sit within the historical fabric of the area, whilst working within the constraints set by the Planning Authorities and various Historic Consultees.

Commercial & Industrial

Building businesses....

Our commercial and industrial experience covers a variety of developments for commercial developers and business clients. Projects include one-off headquarters for private businesses, speculative office developments for the leasing sector, storage / workshop / distribution facilities.

We use our technical experience and understanding of these building types, whilst working closely with each discipline within the design team to produce the most economical and rationalised building form to not only meet the client's current brief but also take account of future requirements for expansion or change.

Education

Helping to build communities....

In this area of work we are allowed to further develop our keen interest and experience in this sector whilst experiencing a worthwhile and satisfying design challenge.

Over the last few years we had recently built a close working relationship with a private children's care and education group and were involved in developing scheme designs for various satellite education and rest bite facilities within the countryside, whilst working on proposals for a new school campus in the greenbelt which was to include; Headquarter and Administration Block, Dedicated School Education Block, Theatre Block, Sports Centre and associated sports fields, Swimming Pool Block, Canteen and Cafe Block, Dedicated On-site Housing Units and a Nursery Block.

We have also recently completed a project to transform an existing office building into a new private nursery.

Drawing Folio

It all starts from the drawing board....

One important part of our job is to use a variety of drawing styles at different stages of the project, to convey our design ideas to the client, local authority and contractors / builders.
We use scheme design drawings and sketches to present our initial concept and thoughts to clients. Keeping these drawings simple, we find, helps our clients to understand and focus on their overall brief without being distracted with too much detail early on.
Once a scheme has been agreed, the drawings are developed into detailed planning drawings which give enough additional information, annotation and if necessary colour to obtain Detailed Planning Approval from the local authorities planning department.

The next stage is to take our Scheme and / or Planning drawings (depending if planning is required for the project) and develop them into a full set of detailed design drawings which focus on the construction and technical aspects of the design, including electrical, lighting and heating layouts. These drawings will enable our client to apply for and obtain Building Warrant Approval from the local authorities Building Control department. We also pride ourselves that our detailed design drawings contain enough information that they allow contractors to build from them without the need of further construction drawings being required for domestic projects. In saying this we can also produce some additional construction / production details as required for bigger commercial / industrial jobs.
